The Cube Task is a VR-based cognitive exercise where the user must place a cube into the correct slot using their hands or a controller, following specific instructions regarding color, position, or sequence.

Gameplay

This task presents a grid-based table to the user, who must manipulate a cube into the correct slot using their hands or a controller. The exercise scales in difficulty: starting with simple positioning and advancing to color matching and sequence memorization. By increasing the number of slots, target choices, and sequence lengths, as well as introducing complex rules like Forward/Backward Sequence Recall, the task forces the user to improve processing speed, focus, and working memory capacity.

Therapeutic purpose

The Cube Task aims to enhance cognitive functions related to working memory, selective attention, and executive functions through goal-oriented tasks in a Virtual Reality (VR) environment. During the exercise, participants must process visual information—such as color, spatial position, or stimulus sequences—retain it mentally, and execute tasks based on the rules of each stage.

The progressive increase in task complexity facilitates improvements in sustained attention, cognitive flexibility, and information processing speed. This makes the exercise a versatile tool for cognitive enhancement in healthy individuals, as well as a core component for Cognitive Remediation Programs targeting populations with:

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Learning Disabilities

Memory Impairment

Acquired Brain Injuries (ABI), including Stroke and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

Clinician guide

Place the VR headset on the participant’s head.

From the exercise selection menu, select the “Cube Task”.

During the environment setup phase, adjust the table position relative to the participant.

Once configured, click “Start” to begin the training session.

Recorded metrics

  1. Placement success rate and target-coverage accuracy
  2. Attempts per target until success
  3. Time per placement (untimed, tracked for trends)
  4. Successful actions and total score
